About

Folklore Ensemble Váh originated in 1979 in Liptovský Mikuláš. The directing of the ensemble is in the hands of civic association Združenie priateľov folklórneho súboru Váh (Friends of folk ensemble Váh association). The ensemble has been in cooperation with Private primary art school in Liptovský Hrádok since 2006. Since 2010, the school has also provided the ensemble with dance rooms. The membership mostly consists of high school and university students from Liptovský Mikuláš region.

Portfolio

The ensemble is unique for the way it chooses and handles the authentic folklore material, as well as for using the original folk clothing of Liptov region villages.

Thanks to the professional leadership (dance pedagogues and choreographers) the ensemble is, apart from stage performances, also capable of organizing workshops and dance schools. That covers teaching and training of basic folklore dance types from various Slovak regions; “čepčenie”, a Slovak wedding tradition; as well as culture and tradition education. The ensemble presents the results of its work to the patrons of folk art from all over the world. It holds several prizes from academic, national, and international competitions of choreographies and dance soloist.

Repertoire and dramaturgy

Though in the past, our dramaturgy was focused on various Slovak regions, today it is entirely focused on the songs and dances of Liptov region.

Lately, our attention has been drawn towards the Liptov’s ‘lost villages’, such as Stankovany, Šuňava, Malé and Veľké Borové, where, thanks to thorough researches, we were able to discover and later process an incredible folklore material. We successfully present its scenic form at various festivals and other events.

Well known villages Východná, Važec, Liptovská Teplička, Štrba, Liptovské Sliače are also an endless source of valuable material for us where we can always find new inspiration, whether intentionally or not. However, we are not afraid to tread from the path of tradition and let go off our imagination to make choreographies such as “Sliepky” or “Úlety” that are combination of traditional dance and drama.
